The allowance system that NSFAS implemented to aid its students covers some of these extra expenses, every academic year, Nsfas distributes bursaries as allowances to students who have been accepted into the program. Who qualifies for NSFAS funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Nsfas also provides funding for the following in addition to paying university students’ registration fees and tuition:

  • (As per the real charges made by the university) (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (40 kilometers from the institution) (up to 40 km from the institution)R7 500 per year
  • Living allowance of R15,000 annually
  • R5 200 in book allowances annually
  • R2900 is the annual incidental/personal care payment for students living in catered housing.

What is covered by the bursary?

The housing, living allowance, transportation, and educational material amounts must be in accordance with the most recent DHET requirements.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
    As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

What conditions must be met before applying?

  • Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
  • Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
  • Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
  • Must have email and cell phone number
