Admission Requirements
​Basic admission requirements for university study:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB) school-leaving certificate as certified by Umalusi with admission to bachelor’s degree studies.
  • A university exemption certificate issued by the South African Matriculation Board to students with other school qualifications.
  • The minimum academic requirement for a bachelor’s degree is:
  • 30% for a South African Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans) and
  • An achievement rating of 4 (50% – 59%) in four 20-credit subjects
  • Only School of Tomorrow applicants has to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) if applying for a program in AgriSciences.

Programs leading to a Viticulture and/or Oenology degree must meet the following faculty requirements:

  • An average of at least 60% in the NSC, IEB, or relevant final school examination.

Your highest grade in the subject of Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans) plus one is used to determine the average (5 x best results in 20 credit subjects excluding Life orientation and Mathematics 3).
The result of the division by six is your NSC average.

Requirements for students qualified in the USA system

You will require the following if you are applying from the United States: GED is not acceptable, along with an American high school diploma, and one of the following:
a letter from any of the following accrediting bodies stating that the applicant is qualified for admission to study at any university in the United States:

  • Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS)
  • Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)

OR
• At least two subjects passed at grades 3, 4, or 5 for the Advanced
Placement (AP) examinations of the American College Board.
OR
• As of May an overall SAT Score of 1130 is required with a
sub-minimum of 610 for Evidence in Reading and Writing and 530
for Mathematics.

National Benschmark Test (NBT)
​A prospective student must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or a school-leaving certificate from the Independent Examination Board (IEB) that has been certified by Umalusi in order to be admitted to a university. Admission to bachelor’s degree programs requires a performance level of at least 4 (50-59%) in each of the four designated university admission subjects.

In addition to the aforementioned, the following is a requirement for admission to programs leading to the BScAgric*, BScFor*, BScConsEcol, BSc Food Sc, and BAgricAdmin degrees:

  • An average performance level of 60% in the NSC or the IEB’s school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation), or other school qualification;
  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%);
  • Mathematics 5 (60%);
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%)

For BScAgric with Soil Science and Chemistry as major subjects:

  • An average performance level of 60% in the NSC or the IEB’s school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation), or other school qualification;
  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%)
  • Mathematics 6 (70%)
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%)

In addition to SU’s general admission standards, the following minimal prerequisites must be met in order to be admitted to the BAgric (Elsenburg) program:

  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%);
  • Mathematics 4 (50%) or Mathematical Literacy 5 (60%);
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%); OR
  • Life Sciences 4 (50%); OR
  • Agricultural Sciences 4 (50%).

The National Benchmark Tests (NBT), including their Mathematics component (MAT), is also required of the prospective student.
