The prospectus is designed to provide detailed information about the university’s academic programmes, admission requirements, fees, scholarships, and other important information. UCT General Admission Requirements

National Senior Certificate (NSC) applicants must, for admission to the higher certificate, diploma or degree programmes have met the NSC requirements for such endorsement.

  1. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for UCT admission but you are 23 years or older and have a Grade 12 (school-leaving) certificate, you may qualify for a mature age exemption. If you fall into this category, you should discuss the possibility of conditional exemption with the relevant faculty office. Applicants with mature age exemptions are not considered for programmes offered in the Faculties of Health Sciences or Law.
  2. Applicants with non-South African secondary school leaving certificates must have met the requirements for matriculation exemption.
  3. All applicants, in the final secondary school, leaving an assessment, must have achieved the minimum criteria for admission to the programme/s of their choice. Which include:
  • the required APS, FPS or WPS as it may apply to the programme of choice
  • performance levels specified for required secondary school subjects
  • performances in the applicable components of the NBTs
  • any other requirements, as outlined in the faculty sections, that may be applicable to specific programmes

UCT Important Dates

April 1

  • All applications open
  • Registration for the National BenchmarkTests (NBTs) is open.

April 9

  • The UCT Virtual Open Day is hosted on Microsoft Teams Live.

July 31

  • All undergraduate applications close. We do not accept late applications.
  • Applications for student housing close.
  • Preferred date for submission of BAS portfolio for early consideration.
  • The last date to write the NBTs if you wish to be considered for a conditional offer by the Faculty of Health Sciences

August 31

  • Closing date for undergraduate programme changes. Requests must be sent to admissions-ug@uct.ac.za with the subject line “Request for programme change”.
  • Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (BA(FA)) portfolios are due.

September 30

  • Final date to submit the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) portfolio.

UCT Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Diploma Study

  • a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

  • a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) need to pass a minimum of 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in any four 20-credit NSC subjects.
  • a South African Senior Certificate needs matriculation endorsement.
  • non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate.

Minimum language proficiency

South African Senior Certificate undergraduate applicants

  • South African Senior Certificate undergraduate applicants to UCT must have achieved a pass of 40% or more on the Higher Grade in English (First or Second Language) at the Senior Certificate level.
  • South African NSC undergraduate applicants to UCT, must have achieved a rating of 2 (Elementary Achievement, 30-40%) or better at the Home Language or First Additional Language level.

  • visit the UCT website via www.uct.ac.za
  • Select the “Apply to UCT” page.
  • Download the online application form
  • Complete the online application form with the required information
  • Upload certified copies of supportive documents such as; academic transcripts, a copy of your ID or passport, proof of payment of the application fee etc.
  • Submit the completed application form along with supportive documents.
