Pietermaritzburg is positioned in the picturesque Natal Midlands, in the middle of a number of parks and nature reserves, just one hour’s drive from Durban, and two hours from the Drakensberg. Several beautiful Victorian and Edwardian structures can be seen around the city, which has a rich architectural past. The former University of Natal was founded in this city, as was its predecessor, the Natal University College, which welcomed 57 students in 1910. The center of the current PMB campus was established when Old Main Building was finished two years later. The campus provides an extensive array of cutting-edge academic programs that have proven successful in meeting regional and local requirements in the fields of science and agriculture, education, law, and business. Human and Management Sciences. Unique to the Pietermaritzburg campus are the disciplines of Agriculture, Theology, and Fine Art.
UKZN Pietermaritzburg Agriculture Faculties
Teaching, research, and community involvement make up the School of Agriculture, Earth, and Environmental Sciences’ three-part purpose. From pigs, poultry, papaws, and pecans to farm finance, food security, and agricultural development, the School has had a tremendous impact on this continent for more than 60 years.

All first-time South African applicants to UKZN for entry into degree/ diploma study (Grade 12s and undergraduate transfer students from other institutions) must apply via the Central Applications Office (CAO).
- Check the CAO handbook that provides listings of qualifications available at the different institutions.
- Look through the various courses offered and choose a program that interests you and for which you may qualify.
- Find the program code that is linked to the qualification that you have chosen. This code needs to be entered on the application form.
- Use this program code when completing the CAO form 2024, which is available from the CAO, the CAO website

Needed Documents for UKZN Pietermaritzburg Campus
All prospective applicants should remember to upload the following documents (where applicable)
- Certified copy of your ID/passport.
- Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
- Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities if you are an international applicant.
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record, and certificate of conduct, if you attended other universities.
- Proof of English proficiency for International applicants from non-English speaking countries.
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
- A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a Masters’s Degree or PhD.
- A valid study visa to study in SA if you are an International applicant.
- USAF/SAQA documents are to be uploaded in order to complete your application.
- Ensure to use reference APPN (followed by your student number) when making application fee payments.
UKZN Pietermaritzburg Campus Online Application Fee 2024-2025
- A non-refundable online application fee of R210 is payable to UKZN (with a late fee of R420)
- If students apply before 31 October 2023, the CAO application fee is R250.
- If students apply from 1 November 2023 onwards, the CAO application fee is R470.
