In the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, there is a public research university called the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). The institution, one of the biggest in the nation, has five campuses spread across two major cities and provides a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in numerous fields of study.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will accept applications from 30 April 2023 through 30 September 2023 for the academic year 2024-2025. Students applying for UKZN 2024 in grade 12 and undergraduate transfer students from other universities must do so through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Whether you are a new applicant from South Africa or an overseas student looking for admission to a degree- or diploma-level program in the first semester (February) of an academic year, please follow the guidelines below to apply;

To apply to UKZN, the applicant must follow a few steps, including:
- Selecting a program: The first step is to choose a program of interest from the list of available undergraduate or postgraduate programs on the university’s website.
- Meeting admission requirements: Each course has specific admission requirements, that prospective students must meet before applying.
- Complete the online application form: Prospective students must create an account on the UKZN website, complete the online application form, and submit all required documents, such as academic transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.
- Pay the application fee: There is a non-refundable application fee, which must be paid by the applicant.
- Tracking the application: Once the application has been submitted, students can track the status of their application online to know their stand.
Apply via CAO Application Form 2024-2025
- Check the CAO handbook that provides listings of qualifications available at the different institutions.
- Look through the various courses offered and choose a programme that interests you and for which you may qualify.
- Find the programme code that is linked to the qualification that you have chosen. This code needs to be entered on the application form.
- Use this programme code when completing the CAO form 2024, which is available from the CAO, the CAO website
- Apply online, by completing the online application form on the website: www.cao.ac.za
It is vital to apply long before the deadline because application dates may change based on the planned program of study.

- Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine opens on 30 April and closes on30 June 2023 (no late applications)

Late Application At UKZN 2024
There are still a few subsidized or self-financed first-year student spots available at the university.
Late APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: 6 FEBRUARY
UKZN Online Application Fee 2024-2025
- A non-refundable online application fee of R210 is payable to UKZN (with a late fee of R420)
- If students apply before 31 October 2023, the CAO application fee is R250.
- If students apply from 1 November 2023 onwards, the CAO application fee is R470.
Needed Documents for UKZN Online Application 2024-2025
All prospective applicants should remember to upload the following documents (where applicable)
- Certified copy of your ID/passport.
- Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
- Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities if you are an international applicant.
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record, and certificate of conduct, if you attended other universities.
- Proof of English proficiency for International applicants from non-English speaking countries.
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
- A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a Masters’s Degree or PhD.
- A valid study visa to study in SA if you are an International applicant.
- USAF/SAQA documents are to be uploaded in order to complete your application.
- Ensure to use reference APPN (followed by your student number) when making application fee payments.
UKZN University Financial Aid And Accommodation
- The University has a policy of granting financial aid and rooms in residence only to students who have a reasonable chance of completing a programme.
- Financial aid and a place in residence will continue if a student’s academic performance is satisfactory. Students in doubt must consult with the Student Funding Centre to determine if further funding will be available.
- If there is a poor chance of funding, it is sensible to start making alternative arrangements or enquire about less expensive study options.
