UP Online Application For 2024-2025
UP Online application for the 2024-2025 academic year portal opens on 1, April 2023 for undergraduate and postgraduate applications. The UP online application portal is intended for use by new prospective students submitting an application to UP for the first time. It is not intended for students presently registered at the University of Pretoria.
UP is a world-renowned institution of higher education located in South Africa, which offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields, including engineering, law, business, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. UP has developed an online application system, making it easier for prospective students to apply for admission to UP.

- Faculty of Veterinary Science: 31 May
- Other faculties: 30 June
To use the Online Application System you will need the following:
- Internet access
- an email address which you can access regularly because as soon as you submit your online application, a student number (EMPLID) will be sent to this email address as confirmation of receipt.

UP Admission Requirements
All applicants who obtained school-leaving qualifications other than the South African NSC or IEB must submit the following documents to be considered for admission to a study programme at UP:
- A school qualification certificate from the country of origin
- Proof of subjects passed at exit level
- A school qualification grading system
- A certificate of Complete Exemption* or Foreign Conditional Exemption obtainable from USAf
- South African Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), IELTS OR TOEFL results, if requested by the relevant faculty.
Minimum requirements to obtain NCV Level 4:
- Offer at least seven (7) subjects)
- Obtain a minimum of 40% in an official language (Home Language
- Level or First Additional Language Level) provided that the language chosen is a language of learning and teaching at the institution.
- Obtain a minimum of 30% in either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
- Obtain a minimum of 40% in Life Orientation
- Obtain a minimum of 50% in four (4) vocational subjects
Minimum requirements for admission to a higher certificate, diploma or bachelor’s degree programme: Higher certificate
- An NCV Level 4 issued by the Council for General and Further Education and Training
- Compliance with the requirements regarding the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution
- Must meet the minimum requirements prescribed by the higher education institution
Diploma
- An NCV Level 4 issued by the Council for General and Further Education and Training
- At least 40% in three (3) Fundamental subjects, including the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution
- At least 50% in the three (3) compulsory vocational subjects
- Must meet the minimum requirements of the higher education institution
Bachelor’s degree
- An NCV Level 4 issued by the Council for General and FurtherEducation and Training
- At least 50% in three (3) Fundamental subjects, including the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution
- At least 60% in four (4) compulsory vocational subjects*
- Must meet the minimum requirements of the higher education institution
- UP applications open on 1 April of the year preceding the year of study.
- Each prospective student must complete only one online application. On the online application, the University of Pretoria offers a first and second choice in terms of what you wish to study. All applicants should fill in both a first and second choice on the online application.
- Once your online application has been processed, you will receive a student number(EMPLID).
- Receiving a student number (EMPLID) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of Pretoria yet. Admission is a separate process that your application undergoes after being evaluated by the relevant faculty.
- It is in your best interest to complete your own online application. The University of Pretoria does not make use of representatives, agents or agencies during the application process. If you choose to make use of representatives, agents or agencies, you do so at your own risk. It is of utmost importance that you provide your personal email and postal addresses to enable the University of Pretoria to communicate with you directly.
- For the application for Distance Education admission (Faculty of Education) please visit the “Distance Education ” web page before you apply. Different rules are applicable.
- It is important to note that should you wish to study the selection programmes BSc(Arch)(Architecture) or BSc(Int)(Interior Architecture), you must indicate them as your first choice on your application, or you will not be considered for these programmes. It is also recommended to indicate the other selection programmes as your first choice on the online application.
